Explaining unsafe pedestrian road crossing behaviours using a Psychophysics-based gap acceptance model

چکیده

Accidents involving pedestrians are particularly common at unsignalised intersections and mid-block crosswalks, where vehicles often do not yield to them. Analysing understanding pedestrian crossing behaviour such locations is vital for improving road safety. Previous studies have repeatedly shown that tend accept smaller time gaps in conditions with higher vehicle speeds thus potentially less safe. This has prompted the hypothesis rely on spatial distance make decisions. However, few investigated mechanism underpinning this phenomenon. We propose a novel approach characterise behaviour: psychophysics-based gap acceptance (PGA) model based visual looming cues binary choice logit method. Road data collected simulated experiment were used analyse test model. Our analysis indicates that, line previous studies, speed increased tendency of acceptance, leading rate unsafe crossings. Crucially, PGA could accurately account these decisions across experimental scenarios, more parsimoniously than conventional These results explain speed-induced by suggesting apply looming, which depends distance, study reinforces notion two same gap, one can elicit risky from pedestrians, resulting severe accidents. The practical implications traffic safety management, modelling development automated discussed.

Pedestrian Gap Acceptance Logit Model in Unsignalized Crosswalks Conflict Zone

Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users. For evaluating and modifying pedestrian safety in unsignalized crosswalks, the first important issue is to identify and explore factors affecting the interaction behavior of pedestrians andvehicles in conflict areas. By analyzing those factors and determining how they affect road user's behavior, we canrepresent the plans and proc...

Pedestrian Road-Crossing Behaviours: A Protocol for an Explanatory Mixed Methods Study

BACKGROUND Pedestrian crossing is an important traffic safety concern. The aim of this paper is to report the protocol for a sequential explanatory mixed methods study that set out to determine the pedestrians' traffic behaviors, the associated factors and exploring the perception of young people about the traffic risky behaviors in crossing the road. The ultimate purpose of the study is to des...

Cultural influence of social information use in pedestrian road-crossing behaviours

Social information use is common in a wide range of group-living animals, notably in humans. The role it plays in decision-making could be a key to understanding how social groups make collective decisions. The observation of road-crossing behaviours in the presence of other individuals is an ideal means to study the influence of social information on decision-making. This study investigated th...

Measuring Unsafe Pedestrian Behavior Using Observational Data

Florida has a severe problem with pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities. Recent trends show that Florida’s pedestrian fatality rate is almost double the national average. Traditional safety programs rely on crash data to develop safety campaigns or countermeasures to increase safety. Since crash data are not readily available and a long time has to pass before meaningful data is collected, a “ris...

Analysis of Pedestrian Road Crossing Behaviour in Urban Areas

The objective of this research is the analysis of pedestrians behaviour along entire trips in urban road networks, with focus on their interaction with the traffic and the road environment while crossing roads. For this purpose, a special field survey was designed and carried out, which involved the recording of pedestrians road crossing behaviour along entire trips in real time by means of cam...
